AMD’s cloud gaming initiative made an appearance at Gamescom this week.Back in March during GDC 2013, AMD revealed that it entered the cloud gaming platform market with the launch of its Radeon Sky passively cooled graphics cards for cloud gaming servers. They’re built from the ground up on the company’s Graphics Core Next architecture, and powered by RapidFire, PowerTune and Full DirectX 11.1. These cards include the dual-slot, dual-GPU (Tahiti) Radeon Sky 900, the dual-slot (Tahiti) Radeon Sky 700 and the single-slot (Pitcaim) Radeon Sky 500, all three of which are capable of supporting up to six HD game streams at once.
AMD has lined up several partners for its cloud gaming efforts—probably not hard to do, since Nvidia has essentially chosen to compete against them. The most visible of those partners to date has been CiiNow, whose VP of Marketing and Publisher Relations, Chris Donahue, was on hand to talk about his firm’s Cumulus cloud gaming platform. His message focused on the the number-one question about Internet-based cloud gaming services: input lag, or the gap in time between a button press and a visible reaction in the game world. Donahue claimed Cumulus can achieve about 17% lower end-to-end latency than some Xbox 360 games do locally.

You’ll hear about it mostly in conversations about the IT industry and cloud-based services like Dropbox and Skype, but there are a few reasons why gamers should pay attention to how cloud computing is affecting the gaming industry. And I’m not just talking about MMOs and online play
The company also hired Karl Jahn as publisher account manager. Jahn was previously the publisher, developer relations manager at Rain Digital Games and OnLive.
